Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of removal of contaminants of emerging concern in solar photo-Fenton raceway pond reactors

The impact of mixing and hydrodynamics on the removal contaminants emerging concern (CECs) detected in a secondary WWTP effluent by solar photo-Fenton process pilot scale Raceway Pond Reactor (RPR) was investigated computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD model incorporated CECs oxidation kinetics at neutral pH with Fe3+-EDDS, radiation transport through water, turbulent flow field produced paddle wheel mixer. solved transient-multiphase (Volume Fluid Sliding Mesh Model) steady-state momentum source domain (SD) model. Experimental RPR time under transient conditions validated models. computationally faster SD predicted varying rotational speed, irradiance, residence time. Deviations from an ideal CSTR were significative (>10%) when half-life/mixing ratios <1, while had minor influence. effects amplified scaled-up treatment capacity decreased 10% compared CSTR. Overall, this study reveals that design large-scale RPRs must be carefully examined to reduce power consumption increasing performance.
